ACUPUNCTURE.

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles, application of warmth, massage, cupping or gentle electric stimulation to specific points on the body. It has been practised for over two thousand years in China.

How does it work?

Acupuncture works by adressing disharmony in the body, whilst restoring and maintaining good health. The benefits frequently include more than just releif from a particular condition. Many people find that it can also lead to increased energy levels, improved sleep, mood and appetite and an enhanced sense of overall well being.

What does it feel like?

When a needle is inserted, the sensation is often described as a tingling or dull ache. Some people experience a sensation of warmth.

What if I am afraid of needles?

Acupuncture needles are very fine, unlike those used in injections or blood tests. If the thought of even fine needles is just too much, there are other techniques used to stimulate acupuncture points, including acupressure, TuiNa (Chinese massage) cupping and the gentle warming application of moxibustion.

Is it safe?

Acupuncture has a very sound track record. Needles are singl use sterile and disposable. Response to treatment occasionally includes tiredness, mild dizziness and rarely, minor bruising may occur. Paradoxically, others feel an increased surge of energy. These responses however, are short lived.

About the consultation.

Your acupuncturist will ask you about your current symptoms and what other treatments you have been receiving. Also your general state of health, lifestyle and past medical history is taken into consideration when deciding upon your treatment plan. At your first consultation the acupuncturist will ask to feel the pulse in both wrists and may wish to look at your tongue.

A treatment session usually takes up to an hour. Once needles are inserted they may be removed after only a few minutes or may remain in place for up to thirty minutes during which time patients commonly experience a feeling of deep relaxation.
